Healthy Mind, Healthy Body
This was a summer health and wellness program designed by Monica Leitner-Laserna, and offered in the summer of 2018 to East Boston teens for free, in collaboration with the YMCA of East Boston and the Yoga en Español Project.
This class was taught bilingually in English and Spanish and students were a combination of bilingual and emergent bilingual students. The class was designed to help teens build self-awareness, confidence and mindfulness through yoga and meditation, and then how to apply these new skills in life and in the kitchen. They were taught the fundamentals of nutrition and how to bring mindfulness to their relationship with food.
The class was taught to three sections of teens that meet on different days. Classes were four hours total, three times a week for 7 weeks, starting in July of 2018. This project was funded by the Kripalu Teaching for Diversity Grant.
